The People and Place

Custer City is a town of 1,860 people; the county numbers over 7,000. There are three main economic sectors: tourism, industrial mineral mining, and logging and/or forest management. The school district just finished and moved into (2005-6 term) a new high school and major water and road projects are underway. Additionally, the city and the county are becoming a retirement location for many from the West Coast and Colorado. The eastern part of the county – beyond the large Custer State Park – is predominately agricultural.
